I found that the clips that hold the flares also do a bang up job holding a torch (flashlight) for emergency use. I got a rubbery torch from morrisons for a quid, but I think one of the smaller maglites will fit in the clips too.
The flares are illegal - they come under Class 1 (HazChem law) - as advised take them to your local police station - if you are stopped and they find it in your car they can actually prosocute you for carrying it. It's amazing that all this sh*t with the SVA the inspectors don't ensure it is removed??? (yes I know about the other things that people remove before an SVA but this really is a "not to be put back" - plus as Martin said his is 12 years old - how stable they will be makes you kind of wonder.
So am I to understand that the flare that I have been gleefully yanking out of the holder and showing off to friends is actually an unstable timebomb that could blow my hands off??
Has anyone actually taken one of these to the local plod?
Ok i need some advice, i was pulled on sat night (not going to bore you with the details) but after the policeman not getting the answers he was looking for, basically because i was in the right and he knew it, out came the line
" thats an awfull strong smelling airfreshner, smells funny, were going to search your car for any illegal substances"
now the resulting search came up with nothing at all, as it should as i dont have or ever will have anything like that in my car, one thing happened though, he took my flare!! under the basis that it is classed as an illegal firearm, i didnt get a receipt from him and wasnt offered one either, so before i file an official complaint and ask him to be charged for illegaly removing property from my car without my permission, does anyone know if his claim was correct? or is it as i thought a part supplied by honda, labeled by them and put to use abroad. Just to confirm this isnt a flare gun it is a roadside flare, it dosnt shoot anything out, it smokes and burns a bright light.
Answer
The firearms act is not specific on flares as far as I can see from my quick look, but sub section b covers a flare ........
Section 5 (1)
(a) any firearm which is so designed or adapted that two or more missiles can be successively discharged without repeated pressure on the trigger.
(ab) any self-loading or pump-action rifled gun other than one which is chambered for .22 rim-fire cartridges.
(aba) any firearm which either has a barrel less than 30cm in length or is less than 60cm in length overall, other than an air weapon, a muzzle-loading gun or a firearm designed as signalling apparatus.
(ac) any self-loading or pump-action smooth bore gun which is not an air weapon or chambered for .22 rim-fire cartridges and either has a barrel less than 24 inches in length or is less than 40 inches in length overall.
(ad) any smooth bore revolver gun other than one which is chambered for 9mm rim-fire cartridges or a muzzle-loading gun.
(ae) any rocket launcher, or any mortar, for projecting a stabilised missile, other than a launcher or mortar designed for line throwing or pyrotechnic purposes or as signalling apparatus.
(b) any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing.
(c) any cartridge with a bullet so designed to explode on or immediately before impact, any ammunition containing or designed or adapted to contain any such noxious thing as is mentioned in paragraph (b) above and, if capable of being used with a firearm of any description, any grenade, bomb or other like missile, or rocket or shell designed to explode as aforesaid.
There may well be specific legeslation to cover flares...........
So after all my extensive research on this site it is still unclear.

Ahhhhhhh now I know what the plastic clips are for in the passenger footwell.
When my Dad passed away I took a Bowie knife, a samauri sword, a machete and several assorted sheath knives into Truro Police Station.(He had been a merchant seaman and had collected these lovely momentos). The desk sargeant looked puzzled as to why I wanted rid of them. I explained that I had a 200 Mile journey home and didn't want to be nicked for possession. He just told me to wrap them up in newspaper and sticky tape, so they weren't readily available, but I let him keep them for disposal anyway.
