  • spare tyre lowering??

went off roading with the surf and blew a tyre 33x12.50x15 bridgestone steel spike in the ground at the quarry so get jack ect out but when lowering the spare it ripped the $$$$$$ valve off=two flat tyres? lucky there was a hilux with us to get me home?
anybody had this prob with the spare?

Went to a petrol station to top air up on tyres. Filling up the tyre I got the air hose stuck on and as I pulled it back off the metal valve snapped off.

Went round a tyre place the next day and they replaced all the metal valves for the standard rubber ones.

I believe they are metal to improve the looks

Was your valve metal or rubber?

Also watch out that the metal valves on standard surf wheels have non standard cores. If you change the core the tyre won't stay up - best swap em for normal plasic ones when you are having the tyres done.

No, the usual problem is the winch mech rusts up and you can't get the tyre down. You must have just been really unlucky.

Yep it pays to raise and lower the spare now and again- better still rotate the tyres each oil change for even wear. Spray plenty of grease (NOT WD40)into the mechanism each time to keep it sweet.

Best bet to be honest is to put the spare in the boot when off roading, last thing you wanna do is put a sharp rock through the side wall when dropping over a step or somthing.
plus it gets coated in muck, far easier to hose the car down then put it back up there.

If you do that make sure the tyre well tied down. Last thing you need is a tyre on your head just after you rolled the truck!

You can get the tyre much higher/closer to the chassis by another inch or so by unbolting the tyre guides on the chassis. You'll need to do this anyway if you're thinking of putting a 33" x 12.5" tyre up there. Just make sure the rubber is away from the exhaust (this is where a custom fitted exhaust can be handy).
