  • Surf Stutters... TonyN?

The Snoop-De-Ville doesn't feel too good at the moment. I picked up some friends from the airport last night and it had a terrible stuttering - like a misfire or fuel delivery problem (maybe that's what it is). It changes slightly with the revs and has a particular bad spot at about 2200. It notices less under acceleration too.

It definately feels like something to do with the engine rather then a wobble from the steering or a bearing or something. It was doing it very slightly before but then seemed to disappear but now it is definately there and worse then it was before.

TonyN - you gave me a list of things to check before but then I immediately left for Brazil so did not get a chance to do all of them. Since, we have had the oil changed and rear drums adjusted and cleaned out. One of the tests you recommended - I tried pulling the handbrake on slightly last night but this did not seem to affect the stutter.

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? I intend to check the fuel filter to see if this is clogged maybe but suggestions very welcome please...

I wondered about the earth from the fuel pump - not even sure where it is?

Look for an air leak on the intake manifold as you say when accelerating problem is less........it will be as the truck is chucking in buckets of fuel and masking the lean running problem

Don't suppose your coming up this way soon? I need to see it and try it really.

Try pulling the fault codes, this will tell if any electrical parts of the pump are playing up.

If you think its fuel, change the filter, check for leaks on all the pipes from the filter to the pump and pump to injectors. Give it a really strong dose of redex and see how it goes.

See it you can see the pump timing marks I made, to make sure the pump hasn't moved a little, but this would really make it knocky/smokey or run bad all the time.

Also, like Rick said, check the intake and EGR system for leaks

Let me know how it goes. How about you mate Matt who do the engine work? would he have any ideas.

Thanks Tony/Rick, I'll try and check those things. Hadn't planned on coming your way but if I can't solve it, I'll make the trip to the toy centre

Did most of the checks in the absolute peeing rain yesterday (except for the fault codes), all seems to be ok. I changed the fuel filter to be sure and ran some redex through as well - didn't make any difference.

I also from idle held it right through the rev range and can detect no stutter like this - so seems it is only on the move. Because the engine really does sound a feel sweet (up to the stutter/vibration point) it has made me start to doubt an engine fault. I did a test drive at various speeds/revs and found it hits its worst at 65mph, about 2200 revs.

I'm starting to wonder if there is some kind of bearing loose/worn somewhere or maybe something to do with the propshaft? It probably is due a greasing...

Before hand when I experienced the problem the steering wheel shook, but back and forwards like a car with a misfire which is exactly the sensation. But now I can feel an element of side to side wobble too - it's more like a bad vibration then a stutter and it doesn't feel like a front bearing. Do you reckon rear bearings or propshaft or something else could cause this kind of behaviour? Cos I'm confoosed!

Thanks for the help so far!

could it be a UJ gone? I had the same sort of feeling when one of mine went. when mine settled into overdrive it seemed at its worst.
hope you get it sorted mate.

Thanks for the suggestion m8 it would be about right to settle into O/D at about 65 which is when its worst, so I think I'll get it checked - there's a 4x4 specialist I trust just down the road.
