  • When is the driver's seatbelt a catapult?

    Hi Folks,
I've been driving my Hi Lux 2.4td Surf for four months now and am thoroughly enjoying the experience. I've had a couple of hairy moments - heavy braking a few weeks ago in the wet produced an exciting rear wheel skid and twitch I was relieved to recover from.

My second moment of motoring bliss came last night. There I was negotiating one of Blackburn's many very steep hills. You know that wonderful moment when you are on the crest of the hill and your headlights are virtually pointing to the sky... Well, I leaned forward and gripped the steering wheel to peep through the windscreen and get my bearings on the road. Next minute the backrest of the driver's seat shot back completely horizontially and attempted to catapult me backwards into the rear of my pride and joy. I managed to keep my grip on the steering wheel, lost my footing and eventually regained control of my faculties and bladder. Somehow, I had managed to hook the seatbelt around the conveniently located lever on the right hand side of the seat and the act of pulling myself forward to look out the windscreen had applied the necessary tension to release the lever.

Has this lovely little beast any more surprises waiting for me?

Hi Pat and welcome to the forum. I must admit I havent done that one yet.

The thing to remember is that the Surf weighs two tons, is rear wheel drive and is not a sports car.

As for the red button next to the gear stick, I was cleaning the inside of the truck, pressed the red button to move the gear shift and the handbrake wasn't on. It's only the fact that the vacuum cleaner pipe started getting shorter that alerted me that I was rolling forward. I managed to get the handbrake on about 2" from the naighbours garage door.
Enjoy the Surf and the big grin that comes as a free accessory.
        It's only a hobby!

                  Hi and welcome!

I've kind of done that, the seat belt was taught, so I gave it a tug, and the lever got pulled up and the seat tried to squash me into the dashboard - luckily I'm fat enough to have survived......
