  • 4wd engage

I have a 96 ssrg hilux surf .When engaging 4wd with either the button
on the 4wd stick or even engaging the 4wd stick into high or low 4wd
it seems to take a long time for the flashing drive train icon to stop flashing
therefore indicating 4wd is activated. Are there any tricks to make the
system activate any quicker? The main problem is when stuck it is too late
to activate 4wd from a bogged position....

If you're moving, back off the accelerator, then press on again, to 'wriggle' the ADD sleeve. If this doesn't work, try slipping into neutral while you are moving, then back into drive. This usually works for me.

If you are stationary, try going from Drive - Neutral - Reverse and back again - this rocks the sleeve back and forth, and usually allows it to engage.

Give it plenty of exercise !!

I sometimes leave it in 4wd for a couple of days now and then, driving to and from work etc.

You should always engage 4wd before entering a situation where you may become stuck, as you should not attempt to engage it whilst any wheels are capable of spinning.

I usually turn sharply both ways several times. If that doesnt work I just boot it and hope for the best!!!

2nd Gen on tarmac, you are correct. 3rd Gen on tarmac, 4WD is OK, as they have the centre diff - just don't use it with the diff locked, or in low range.
