Having done the modified street car thing and been in many, my suggestion:
V-TEC a mini... then fit NAWS

Seen a VTEC mini on my Ind Est (Seaford), kept blatting up and down the road with no bonet on so you could see the cam covers. Must be an awsome toy.

There's a firm not far from me (Derby area I think) that has bought the pressign jigs for he old Jag mkII (the one Morse used the drive)

What they do is take old body shells (I think they also own patent on shells for MG roadsters) and build a new car underneath.

A bloke in Doncaster drives round in a 03 plate Jag MkII, in gleaming british racing green and under the skin it's all BMW (M3 spec engine etc.). When I last spoke to him, he was talking about NOS & perhaps a supercharger.

He gets all the reliability of a modern car with the fab looks of summat retro. Next tie I see him I'll get the details of the firm
