Not sure if this should be under General or Technical/Electrical...

When using the mirror retract, the R/H mirror stops halfway in, with the motor whining away for a few seconds, then gives a clonk and moves the rest of the way. When folding them out again, the mirror doesn't quite open fully, but needs to be pushed the last 1/4".

    Any ideas?

    How do they come apart?

    TIA

my old celica had that , you are missing some teeth on one of the cogs, I took mine apart (dont do it) and found one cog was missing a few teeth, and I could not find a repalcement anywhere, I would guess its the same mechanism in both cars, if so go to a s**** yard and find a retracting mirror and take the mechanism out.

B#gger - I thought it might be something like that. Looks like I may have to get a workshop manual sooner than I thought

If its like my celica, you dont need a workshop manual to take the mirror off, there is a plastic cover on the inside, just remove that and then undo the bolts/screws that are there and the mirror will fall off the car, then I think there are a few more bolts and the whole thing falls apart, that or you have to take the mirror glass out (becareful you donty want to replace that). If you are quick there is a set of hr2 mirrors for sale on ebay 4605314908 they should do, but I cant garantee anything but logic would dictate as its a JDM thing they would all use the same mechanism.
          Good luck
