There is evidence of camper conversions about:

A double bed in the back, with drop down sides containing a cooker, water container and sink

I tried, but it appears that what I remember were links to ebay pics, and their lots have now expired

This used to be a good link to camping in a Surf (US, 3rd generation): http://www.mycolorado.org/4runner/4runner_camping.html but it seems not to be up to much today.

The crux of it was that the guy managed to get some sleep in the back of his Surf by removing the rear seat cushion - the seat back still folds flat but the available length is then 6'8" (or to the back of the front seat).

This is simple to do with a 10mm socket (and in fact it's how I got a Suzuki GS in the back of a my 2nd Gen. It's amazing how much length there is to play with!)

If you want to go further, there's room underneath for a water tank and it shouldn'be hard to bolt a small cooker to the tailgate. Then there are truck tents available from the US, some of which are for "SUVs".

Got to be better than sleeping on the ground.

ever thought about a rooftop tent? The camper kits pop up on e-bay from time to time.
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!
