The crux of it was that the guy managed to get some sleep in the back of his Surf by removing the rear seat cushion - the seat back still folds flat but the available length is then 6'8" (or to the back of the front seat).
This is simple to do with a 10mm socket (and in fact it's how I got a Suzuki GS in the back of a my 2nd Gen. It's amazing how much length there is to play with!)
If you want to go further, there's room underneath for a water tank and it shouldn'be hard to bolt a small cooker to the tailgate. Then there are truck tents available from the US, some of which are for "SUVs".
