  • Ssangyong Musso

    Hi all,

A friend knows I am thinking of buying a 4x4 and said he had been there & done that with a Surf. His latest 4x4 is a SSANGYONG MUSSO which he says is the dogs...

What are your views on this Korean Merc powered 4x4 ?

I don't like the look of it, but he says if I drive it I'll want one

    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Drive it, and see what it's like! Then drive a Surf, and realise that your friend doesn't have a clue what he's talking about!!
    It just does, OK?

Tell him to buy a 4x4 instead!

I nearly got crushed to death under one of those. Stoopid driver wasn't paying attention.

Actually they're not too bad to drive. Quite smooth and the engines are nice (well, they should be really). Quite a high trim level too. I wouldn't want a car no one can pronounce though. Ssangwhat?

I laughed to myself when he said that it had just eaten a gearbox

Looks a complete tw*t, what were the designers thinking about ?

I was going to try it until I saw a picture on eblag

Still am still in the running for a 3.0L Surf, but I am going to put a bit more cash aside B4 I go to buy.

Ssangyongsongying musso, hmm have to say the engines are supposed to be very good and refined. Not bad to drive, in a straight line, seatings not bad but not as good as the Surf in my opinion. Body roll is not as bad as a Paj (you can touch the ground out the passenger window on corners) but still to evident for my liking.
Trim level is high but so is the price, I have been told if its got no Service history do not touch it with a barge pole.
Lastly if driving round in a vehicle that was designed as a bet between stevie wonder and julian cleary and a cross between the back end of an amphibian car and the hunchback of notre dam then go for it.

Also while the engine (talking the 2.9 diesel here) is strong, reliable and smooth, it's very gutless for a vehicle that size. It's also a very old design so is not very economical either.

Petrol one is a real street rocket but fuel consumption is horrible.

You get a lot of toys for your money with the Musso though.

However have you seen the latest incarnation which is only now available as a Pickup - now that is one ugly beast.

I bought a new musso in 98, had it 3 and 1/2 years.
Very comfy and easy to drive, load it with as much weight as you can and it makes no differance to performance and handeling.
Those are the good points, now the bad.........

@ 48,000 mls the clutch went due to a leaking rear crank shaft oil seal
                and it happened again @62,000.
Borg warner gearbox finaly gave up second and reverse gears @ 96,000.
The cylinder head gasket blew @ 105,000 which resulted in a 2nd hand engine being sourced and fitted, cheaper at £1400 (+VAT), than the top end rebuild on the high milage original (Quoted £800 just for the gasket set)
Exhaust went @ around 60 thou but there where no replacement ones either from the dealers or pattern copy's. Had to have a purpose made one from stainless specialists.
Full service history at the dealers too, (which cost the equvelent of an latin american country GDP) But the dealer only stood the cost of the first clutch replacement, the rest came from my pocket, which made the £22,000 motor a damn site more expensive over the time I kept it. When the whale eventualy went it only fetched £5.500. Ouch!

Bought my surf for £10.500, done the services myself, and the only things so far gone faulty (54,000 miles when bought, 114,000 mls now) are:-
Bent side steps, bust the exhaust, twisted front bumper and broken the quater bumper trim off, all from off roading, so my fault.
                Needed a new battery @ 90,000 mls (£40)
Rear nearside halfshaft oil seal (£3.50)
                Rear nearside brake cylinder (8.50)
Loads of oil, filters and two sets of tyres, and it is still worth around £6-7,000

Buy a Musso by all means but dont expect to find parts easy or cheap and you will need them in abundance!
My next car will also be a Surf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it smells like fish, eat it!
