It goes out after the engine has started.
If it comes on when you are driving, it means there is a problem that one of the engine sensors has picked up and the code will be stored in the ECU for recovery.
I do not know much about how they work. Am I supposed to feel a surge or see the counter jump once past a certain RPM? If it runs off of the outlet manifold how can it not work? The blades turn freely.
I find the light very annoying, as it is basically always on during normal driving.
You will not feel a "kick" as in a turbo powered petrol engined car, as he turbo it an LPT, low pressure turbo. Its just to help rather than make massive performance gains.
I would imagine that the light is just a very primative boost gauge, than senses when the turbo boost reaches a certain level and just comes on, to let you know its working.
though as has been stted here, if it wasnt working, you'd know about it anyway as you'd not hear the whistle, and surf you'd be even slower!!
