i've just ordered a 320gb external hard drive for all my dirty pics and videos... but... whats the difference between FAT32 and NTFS??

my computer knowledge has gone seriously downhill since windows 3.1!!


also bought 1gb ram so i'll be cooking on gas!

1gig ram great for gaming.may benefit ur porn collection.

what OS are you using? if its WinXP then it will make sense of NTFS.

yeah, it's XP... the internal one is NTFS so i guess it would make sense to use that... and on the comparison NTFS looks a better idea.

NTFS is billed as better and faster than FAT32 if you're on xp.


however, I've tried both on xp and even had 2 harddrives each running different formats with no noticable difference.

The xp experts reckon on NTFS so I'd say go with that.

i didn't know anything about it but most of the reviews for the HDD say it comes in FAT32 so reformat it in ntfs... didn't even know there were 2 different ones!..


last one i formatted was only a 128k drive!! hehehe!!

Yeah use NTFS - it makes better use of the space and has better error-correction too. That is if you are only ever going to be connecting it to a windows PC. If you use NTFS and try in the future to connect it to a Linux machine or something you won't be able to read it.

I have one I use at home (windows) and work (linux) so I have 1 partition FAT32 for my music (used at work) and another partition ntfs for home backups (not needed at work).

Fat32 is the 32bit derivitive from FAT16 [ie Windows 3.1/95 systems]. The disk is formatted using smaller segments [clusters] which makes the disk more efficient in usage.

NTFS is derived from the Windows NT [New Technology]. This allows larger disk sizes, is more resilient [ie can use RAID to mirror drives [RAID 1] or provide spanning across disks to enable recovery of a lost disk [RAID 5].

NTFS also allows for greater security features [on later versions of Windows it allows for distributed filing systems [files seen as one drive but contained over severalk], enhanced folder and file security privileges and even providing quotas for disk usage on Windows Servers...

Note: If you format your drive to NTFS you will not be able to see the drives with some other systems installed and also you are unable to gain access to the data if you have accidentally rremoved the boot-up partition [other than using tools like NTFSDOS]

the only downside is if you want to take it rounds someones house who has win 98 or a MAC

basically keep the big stuff there rather than jamming up my ickle laptop... and take it to friends and nick all their music!!
