  • Child Safety Seats

    Hi

I have a 96 surf which I bought recently. I am unable to fit the child seat that clips into the pushchair that I have for my three month old son.

The problem is that the rear seat belts are a little too short and I don't know of any way to disable the front passenger airbag.

Does anyone know of how I could get a longer seat belt or disable the front airbag? I have bought an alternative car seat to get me through, but would prefer to use the one that comes with my sons pushchair.

    Many thanks for any help

    i found that too...
the seat fitted with a struggle, so just went along with it... he wasn't small for long, so just got a different seat when he was big enough for it.

is it the travel system one with giraffe print from mother care?it's tricky to do with baby strapped in cos i had to tilt seat forward to get it strapped in.

have you tried with rear seat reclined a bit so you got a little more room?

        Hi,
This is an unresolved problem between car manufacturers and child safety seat manufacturers'... they do not consider, consult, accommodate each other when making their product....nearest is volvo who actually make a child seat, but it does nothing else but remain fixed in car facing rearwards and is only suitable for children of a certain weight / size....On your particular point, I would advise you buy / obtain / a lapstrap seatbelt and fix this to existing floor mountings which you will find between the vertical and horizontal portions / split of the rear seat/s....put your full adult weight on the childseat when you are strapping it in....this way you will reduce to a minimum the amount you can move the childseat which sit atop the car seat...Ideally the childseat should fix to a strengthened car body mount, without any other upholstery in its way ! There are some issues about disabling srs ( airbags) which are a no-no in the motor trade, a bit like acceeding to any request to remove a seat belt... different if the car owner does the modification, or is it ?

Very much regret not being more helpful to you. It annoys me this whole issue rumbles on.....

Had the same problem. however I found a way round it. the directions tell you to pull the balt accross and then clip it into the four 'slots'. When you do that you find that you cannot hook it into the top two slots cos it wont stretch over the top.

I found that if I pulled out all the belt length, then pulled it into the bottom two slots (next to the babies hips if you see what I mean), then WITHOUT pluggin the seatbelt in you can just loop it over the top and hook the top two points in, then after that you can plug the seatbelt in and it just reaches and fits very nicely.

sounds awkward but is dead easy once you get the hang.

If this doesn't work for you then I also thought of the seatbelts. old shape lancruisers look like they have longer belts, I wonder if the reel off one of those might fit?

I did a reply on this subject before . Somewhere on here is the thread . There are extensions available to add on to the seatbelt to give the belt more lentgh specificaly for this problem . As the seat is a Britax the company may do a extension piece for this problem .

Britax do make seat belts aswell as seats .

Edit : found this site , not exactly the same as I found before :http://www.store.yahoo.net/wescoperf...-extender.html

the little lady is nearly 7 months now, so i'll have to be upgrading to a larger seat, has anyone had issues with the larger forward facing seats?

i've never seen the standard interior, the recaros are quite thin. i had a real struggle with my cherokee, but there seems to be plenty of seat belt slack in me surf.

nah, mine has the seatbelt fitting through the "frame" of the seat... bit more involved to get in and out, but it's not designed as a carrier.

i.e. tilt seat forward, thread seatbelt though and plug in, pull seatbelt tight and lock to seat fittings, pull lever on seat to tighten seat into place.

it only takes a minute or two and the seat's pretty much solid in place.

can't remember the make, but mothercare came and test fitted it in the carpark and all was good.
