  • Smoke (again)

I am slightly concerned. I disconnected my EGR and yes the smoke cleared to a vast degree. I then changed the injectors and the engine is more zippy and feels a lot smoother but I am now back to black smoke, any clues chaps? I'm at a total loss.

Lastly what's involved in changin the pistons rings? that's the last thing I can think of that will need doing to my baby.

Cheers and I hope you all had a cool yule!

personaly i wouldnt go messin around with the fuel pump, there is nothing you can sdo to it,apart from making sure the timing is correct,as i found out much to my cost.i would be looking at the air filter and intake trunking for blockages if i were you, plus make sure the egr valve is closed sometimes they stick in the open position, just push the valve up and down a bit from underneath the valve.you will soon see if it is sticking.

Ecu may need resetting, disconnect batteries for 30 mins, or renew the air filter.

OK New air filter has been applied but still not checked the timing.
So is the suggestion to check the Air Pipes? Will that cause my plumes of black smoke?

i'd say ECU too... probably adjusted pump timing etc for old injectors and need to re-learn.

Mine doesn't smoke at all really, only on floor it acceleration from a standstill. I have my EGR still connected, and will leave it connected. I spoke to a Toyota fitter the other day about it and it's like he said. Toyota spend millions on product develepment. The EGR is fitted for a reason, and the engine management system is designed to run with this device working. If you disconnect it, then you are changing all that.

It's fitted to meet emissions regulations. Disconnecting it won't upset the ECU.
It's a bit like having your appendix removed!

I had mine removed before owning the Surf, wish I had waited a bit. my EGR is disconnected can't say noticed any difference at all. puffs on full chat but that's best avoided cause of cost.
                      Should have bought a 3ltr
