  • Newbie - what model have I got?

Apologies but this is a Hilux pickup question - I can't find a forum just for pickups and you Surf guys seem pretty clued up. Two queries:

Firstly I've just bought myself a cheapy workhorse pickup in Cornwall and really like it, but am unsure what exact model it is, can you help please?

From my V5 it's a 2446cc diesel Hilux pickup, first reg 10/03/89, 'F' plate. It's a non turbo and I think it's known in the UK as a 'Mark 3' (rounder looking body work and dasboard than the Mark 2?)

I specified this when I ordered a maintainance manual from Milner's and the manual I got was a 'Max Ellery' (Australian 70's porn star??) 'Hilux/4 Runner 1979 - 1997 LN-Diesel Engines' manual. Inside this there is no mention of 'Mark 3' but instead lots of presumably Aussie spec talk of 'RN 20, 30 & 40 ... YN, LN 50 & 60 and YN, RN, VZN 120 & 130'. Which is mine out of this lot?

Secondly, I get a fair bit of diesel smoke under hard acceleration and have read loads of your posts with various remedies. The EGR is an option, but I don't seem to have one. Is the EGR only fitted on turbo models, or is my 'ole 1989 too old to have one? Or is the EGR only fitted to non UK market models.

Appreciate your time - even though my beaten up old hilux is just a workhorse I've already become quite fond of it and am enjoying all the info in this forum. Cheers!

    Simon Morris.

You could look at the V5 to get the chassis number. My Surf begins with LN130, so the numbers you quoted above will give you the biggest clue as to what yours is..
    It just does, OK?

Have a look at the Roughtrax site http://www.toyotahilux.com/index.php?doc=11&cid=14 and you should get an idea of what you've got.

nice to see another pickup here, had a mk2 single cab for 11 years before my current truck, would still have it if i hadn't needed baby room, as said before chassis number will give you your model type. you've got a fab truck mate, get decent set of tyres and she'll be unstopable! top gear tested!
              Diesel, like petrol only better

                Thanks for the above.

Model ID - chassis number no help but on the chassis plate was faintly printed the model number, LN105R. Brilliant, should have clocked that before. So I've definately got a Mk3 diesel.

BUT what is this in my Max Ellery manual? I've had plenty of petrol motors in bits before but this is my first diesel and I'm itchin to dive in, but want to use the manual.

Thanks for the 'smokin' tip. Will check pump timing once I'm up to speed wiv the manual.

                By the way, wot's a '4 Runner'?

MUST say I'm impressed with the response you guys have given me. It's great!
