  • not getting gears???

hey all, need a little bit of help.. my beloved surf with its brand new shiny head has just come back from manchester on the back of a transporter. would not get top gear, so 55 mph was pulling 3000 rpm, my self imposed limit, taking my folks to the airport it wouldnt get reverse, so out with the RAC who didnt even look at it just sent out a transporter. got my folks off alright though

its back with the garage that done my head .. 2 days ago.. have they knocked something off??

they did say they needed a circlip they had lost off a gear box seal. if that makes any sense to anyone??

    any idea???

Did you check the Transmission oil level??? Mine is leaking a bit at the moment.. If it gets too low its a pain in the ar$e!!.. If they have lost a circlip seal then yours could be leaking causing the prob..

Transmissions on auto's are a nightmare... general rule of thimb is don't touch it unless you absolutly HAVE to!!

Wouldn't have a clue on this one.. Get them to put back whatever clips they "lost" and if it still doesn't work it'll be down to them.. I presume it worked fine when it went in..

still waiting to hear from them, but as you say its a nightmare job, probably one best left to a specialist.

The TPS can cause these and other problems with autos. Could also be the auto ECU but check the cheaper options first.

Why would they disturb a gearbox seal if they were working on the head?

dont know why ... maybe i got wired crossed, because i cant think of any reason to mess with gearbox seals, spoke to the mechanic and hes says the only thing they touchedis the TPS. so would certainly suggest this, but would this prevent it from selecting reverse? can understand why it wont get top with the tps playing up but reverse?? no idea

Have you tried disconnecting your batteries for half an hour to reset the ECU?

they have now got all forward gears by addjusting the throttle position sensor, but still no reverse.. got them trying your suggestion now vince but as to the reverse im stumped. could it be a soleniod?? they saying a specialist has told them there are five clutches in the gearbox and he reverse clutch my have be burnt out.. does this ring true??

                      sorry to keep asking

The phrase, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t" springs to mind here.
Theres not a lot that can go wrong with auto 'boxes, they rely on input from the gear lever and fluid does the rest. Strange that they would say that the reverse 'clutch has burnt out'! why would only reverse be affected and not the forward gears?
I suspect they have re-connected some hoses or cables somewhere and they are a bit confused. But hey, they're sorting it for you and you aint gotta pay so it's their problem now.

they cover auto boxes... think the clutches are like metal bands rather than clutch plates like a manual box... but i haven't got a clue!... i can't even fathom out a sturmey archer 3 speed!
