  • Argh Help , NOW It wont start.

Me again . Yep youve read the pig of a time I had changing the plugs - well it started after changing them and went around the block .

So this morning went out to see if things were any better on a cold start .

The Bitch wont start at all . just keeps turning over and over . not even a hint of a start

Anything I can do or is it a garage job ?

Is the glow plug relay working . It should click on then heat the plugs, then about 6-8 seconds later click off. I,m suffering the same problems at present and have now traced the problem to that.

Yeah just ran out and checked , nice big click when the relay turns off, sounds like it comes from behind the glove box. just keeps turning over , white smoke coming from exhaust , but wont fire.

      cheers.

The engine will start without any help from the glow plugs but it takes lots of cranking. (i should know, mine were all dead)
If yours still wont go its likley the fuel shut off solonoid is not opening.

When you first try to start her, wait till the plug heating light goes out and listen for the loud clunk before the beep. If there is no clunk you can assume there is no diesel.

ok got it to start eventually , by spraying wd40 in the air intake while cranking. im guessing this points to glow plugs not working. so I am back to square one !

Given up ! this is too much for my limited skills ( plus I need it as its my daily driver ) about to call the garage to see when they can fit me in.

At least I cant point them in the right direction so I wont get the "sucked air through teeth" syndrome.!!

there is a Bedford member who works in a garage Warrior67 or something
                      never seen him post much
(spotted one post by when i first joined and thought YAY!! locals)

he may be your best bet if you can find him as i think he does all his own work on his (i think the post i read was about changing the tensioners when you do a timeing belt)

Hi SparX, Im following this with great interest as im planning to change my
plugs and injectors after christmas, Thought it was a straight forward job
maybe a bit fiddley but doable, Got me thinking twice now! Can you not see the plugs glowing when connected to a battery? Im not sure how but assume
the plugs got a feed on top and earthed through the body of the plug!!, Know the sharp intake of breath bit , Had that when a garage told me it would
cost 1800 quid to service my fuel pump, That was bo**ocks! Three bottles of
Wynns cleaner did the job, Good luck and keep us posted, Regards Ian

dont know about injectors , not got that far yet ! the job was do able as you say , just needed more time than we had and the cold and dark does not help.

haven't tested the glow plugs yet but yes that is the way to test them. Its booked in with local garage who usually do work on my car . so will let you know what they find.

Sounds like your in dire need of a garage! Nothing dampens the enthusism
like getting wet and freezing your nuts off, I just manage to get mine in my
garage, bit of a squeeze and not much room to work, but better cramped than cold, Good luck Ian
