  • Ran out of juice this morning!

Oh what a joyous morning, cruising to work in the pouring rain, red light on for low fuel but no worries, only came on last night, plenty of time before I have to fill up, its only 11 miles to work so I'll fill up as I leave. Wrong.
Hit the motorway and the power drops, aim for the nearest exit and she dies on the off ramp, yump her onto the grass verge and go for a wet walk to the nearest garage.
Still at least I've determined my tank capacity. 4 and a bit litres from the loaner petrol can with no spout and cling-wrap for a lid (for this I had to leave €6 deposit), followed by 61.7 litres at the station filling her to the gills. Think I can be certain its a 65l tank so.
This makes it my first straight, uncut, dinodiesel fill for months, no vegoil in the tank at all!

At least it wasn't like trying to restart an older diesel after running out, 30secs priming at the filter, 5 or 6 spins of the engine and away she went.

So I'm sitting here in work with a hot air heater blowy thing drying off, having a cupa as I type.

    See y'all later

I have found that Toyota fuel gauges are very accurate.Drove a Corolla to Roma western Queensland and on leaving looked a gauge and thought that I would make the next town.I ran out of fuel just as I was overtaking a couple of other vehicles which is a little scary when there are road trains coming the other way.

After about an hour I managed to get some fuel from a guy who was returning from a fishing trip to Hervey Bay and he drained some fuel from his outboard motor and that got me to the next garage.I am not tempted to test the accuracy of the Surfs fuel gauge.

I'm certainly not complaining, over the years I've only twice before run out of juice, first occasion was on the forecourt whilst queing for the pump, second time was about 20 yards past a filling station, was going uphill at the time so just let her roll back straight into the station right up to the pump to the amazement of the Garda (police) car watching me as they fueled from the other side of the pump. Both those occasions were in MkII Escorts.

All in all, this morning included, I've not done too bad

I,ve done something similar ,ran the tank down without getting an opportunity to refill....made for the nearest filling station, drove up the off ramp to pull off the dual carriageway, depressed the clutch at the giveway sign at the top and....it just died . I reckon the angle of the surf & the limited fuel starved the pump .
Anyway I,m stuck just on the top of the ramp...nobody to help . Somehow I managed to push a 2t surf over the brink of the off ramp onto the main road...fortunately it,s all downhill to the garage & after a 100 yards with the nose of the surf facing down it bump-started & I got to the pump no problem.
I was thinking of putting a 3L bottle of veg oil in the boot (just in case)
I don,t use it normally - but as a back-up it could be useful & not as smelly as diesel in your boot.

When I first got the surf I bought a small owners manual from Toyota. It would seem they don't rate the accuracy of the guage.

In the description of it it says 'F' means almost full and 'E' means almost empty. No mention of how much fuel will be left.

After The wife put petrol in mine I noticed when I drained it that there were about 8L left in when the light came on, whilst on flat ground.

I always try to keep it over quater full but when it is this cold and wet it is much easier to chance it and wait for a warmer day...

                Phil.
