    In no particular order:

    Saab 96 (several)
    Peugeot diseasel (big mistake)
    Saab 99
Saab 900 ("Classic" shape - the best )
    Saab 95 (not 9-5)
    Saab 9000
    L*nd R*ver Series III
Citroën Berlingo diesel (which I am keeping because it's too useful to let go of)

All bar Citroën (bought new in '03) were >10 yrs old with >100,000 miles on clock when bought. Only Peugeot and Rover gave me grief.

                  Hmm... an observation

A very mixed bag of motoring between us, been looking back over the posts on this thread, seems plenty of us have had a taste for many different cars, but one thing stood out for me, very few of us have previously had Toyota's.

From this thread it would appear that the Surf was the first Toyota owned by the majority of us (spotted only 5 who had a Toyota previously), yet already the evidence can be seen that some (myself included) have since gone for a subsequent one. Is this a tribute to Toyota, or just the Surf?

                    ah.. make that 6...
(bearing in mind im not yet 30)
I passed my test in a F**d Fiesta
drove around in a Renault CLio and a Maestro van for a year,
then I got a Nissan Micra C reg 1ltr ( it had to have a new engine cuz I killed it) as a college commuter ( £3 would get me to and from college for a week) when i was 18
then I had a G reg Suzuki Vitara fat boy when I was 19
then I got a P reg Fiat Punto which was a great little car and very reliable when I was 21
then I got a D reg Honda VFR400.. then I wanted a bigger bike so I sold the Punto, Bought my friends Golf 1.8 GL D reg and got a V reg SUzuki GSXR600 ...
then I sold my friends Golf back to her Dad and bought a W reg (81) AMC CJ7 Jeep... then I sold it and rode around on pushers for a while as well as a (02) BMW f650cs and (02) triumph speed four and then a (03) triumph speed triple...
then, my grandad intervened and say, oy, get a Toyota theyre great ( its true I used to love being driven around in my dads Celica and my grandads Supra).. so I did, and got a G reg MR2 mk2 and it was the best car Ive ever owned, I would definitely have another. I was also riding an (04) Yamaha R6 around at the same time... Then I needed more space to carry mine and my team mates pushers around to races so I trotted off and got a K reg Surf 2.4td. Its ok, im not raving about mine, ever since the head went, its been replaced with a good one but ive never really bonded with it. I would sell it for a 3ltr, but I cant afford to... so Im making do until I can afford a better one or might go for a simple Hilux with a cab back...
Toyota are, in my mind at least, one of the best manufacturers out there at the moment. ( I worked in vehicle recall company for a while and top of the list was Vauxhall, Ford, Citreon, Peugeot, Renault, Honda... )

                      Hi all,

Well, our first and previous car was/is a smart car (we use both) - talk about a paradigm shift ...I fear we even lost some politically correct friends (no loss really), who were shocked at our previous 'green' credentials, and then watched us purchase our gorgeous Hi-Lux.

I reckon, once owned, they are seriously hard to ignore. We've been all over Europe in ours, and keep it really well serviced, and I can't think of a better feel in any car. Anyway, isn't that part of being 'green' too - maintaining a vehicle, whereas some of those 'lost friends' drive their own cars into the ground, and then just buy new ones - what the f*** is green about that???

And why not maintain a vehicle that will give the best returns - a Hi-Lux Surf!!!

Apologies - I appear to have slipped a rant in, but it's all relative.

                      Steve

                        HI
had a variation over the years, started with a motorbike and worked up from that,

                        YAMAHA 250,

RELIANT ROBIN VAN ( fun little chariot ),

AUSTIN ALLEGRO 1.8, ( fast and rusty )

FORD CORTINA MK 4, ( car thieves loved it )

NISSAN BLUEBIRD EST, ( couldn't keep up to it rusting away),

FORD ESCORT 1.4, ( head gasket problems ),

VAUXHALL ASTRA 1.4 EST, (great car, never had a problem in 12
                        years ),

FORD ESCORT 1.8 Si, ( fast but no good for towing )

NOW A BIG BEAUTIFUL HILUX SURF SSR-G ( need this to tow my boat )

Well immediately prior to my Surf I had a 1998 Nissan 200 SX turbo touring, which actually was not much cheaper to run than my Surf, and a lot less versatile. Hence it only had 22,000 miles on it when I sold it.

Since I have been changing cars on a regular basis since I was finally able to aford one in 1964, the list is too numerous to mention but has included most makes, including (to my shame) a Polski Fiat and a FSO Polonez!

Interestingly enough, in support of a comment by Morr, its the first Toyota I have owned (or even been in)........

Before the Surf, a Mercedes 190E, an Astra diesel, Peugeot 205, Mini, Renault 5, Triumph Herald Convertible, Triumph Herald Saloon, Citroen 2cv, Mk 2 Escort (When they were bangers, not collectible) and a Fiat X1/9 that I got as scrap with the intention of doing up but never did. I sold it and the buyer did a good job of it.
