Have a 'butchers' at this, especially down the left hand side.

      Supra engines

You could be onto something Bushwacker!
I'm still looking for a replacement engine and I now have the funds. Mechanically minded mate said not to put anything bigger than the origional engine in if its from another 4x4, i.e. Land Crusier, Patrol or even a Surf since the increased torque will snap crackle and pop the transmission, prop shaft etc. My surf is a 2.4l. The Supra engine is 3l but has most of the torque in the upper ranges so in theory setting off in the converted Surf should be safe since the torque then is much the same as the 2.4l origional engine. You only need the upper end torque for overtaking BMW's in the outside lane!!
Engine bay setup looks similar to. Battery and fuse box would have to be swapped over with the air intake and filter. Probably need the Supra rad but that might be a tight squeeze. Wish my ball and chain would stop going on about getting the Surf back on the road so we can take the caravan out. This needs some serious thought!!

remember reading in an aussie 4x4 mag, that toyota achieve their reliability in part by under powering their trucks, so a small increase in power should be easily handled, there are enough 3.5ltr rover v8 hiluxes around. not sure how similar the 2.4d is to the 2l petrol in the pickup etc but i knew someone who'd swapped in a 2ltr celica lump said hardest job was connecting the throttle cable!again not sure of the similarities but the 2.5ltr/3ltr v6 from the camry is supposed to fit onto the 2ltr petrols gearbox bell housing. hope there maybe something of inrest here.
        Diesel, like petrol only better

            Re-conditioned engines

One thing that's been bugging me. What do you have to do to an engine before it's classed as re-conditioned ? Phoned Stevo yesterday regarding a replacement and was quoted £1200 for a recon but I can get the same kind from an insurance write off from nippon spares for only £800 and that's been pressure checked and checked over for any problems. I'm worried about the head going when the 3 month warranty runs out.

A proper recon should have been stripped down, checked and rebuilt replacing any out of tolerance parts.
Cheap ones are usually started up, and if it makes no smoke and fires on all cylinders, its called 'recon-ed'

Nippon spares have had a few bad reviews i'd have STEVO rebuild it for you.
Then it is a RECON for sure not a reCON

I totally agree with TonyN above comments (what used to be called Re-Manufacturing ) is the best way short of a new engine. In fact talking of "short" this usually means short engine / ie you have to check out all the ancilliary bits as well before you re-fit them such as
Alternator, Starter Motor, Fuel Pump, Steering Pump etc etc everything not contained within "the envelope" of the engine ...if you dont one or more of these may fail at wrong time very early on.. balls to the philosophy "if it aint broke" if you goin to the bother of swapping engine lumps...

                  Peter

Goin to see a 2982cc remanufactured short, ready next weekend..then I'll get the price before deciding...could be into four figures...

Went on engines direct on web and they give a list on what's done on an engine to make it recon. Probably go for one from Stevo since he is well recommended and I'll be getting a virtually new engine with a longer warranty. Wont be selling the escort for a while now. It's just no fun compared to my Surf.

At least it will give me some time to sort out everything else like new spots, roof rack, raising the suspension etc, you know, the things you dont want the wife to know just yet!!
