    Hi mate.

Need a bit of advice. I have looked at my data plate to see what info I could get for the rear axle?

I want to change all the running gear oil in my Surf. It's a 1994 2nd gen, 3.0lt auto. I know what goes in the Auto box, no problem. Could you help me out on what type and qty of oil for the rest please???

    Can you tell me what oil I need for;

    Front Axle, type and qty

    Transfer box, type and qty

    Rear alxle, type and qty

I noticed on the vin plate that I have a A343F transmission and a G294 rear axle. Is this an LSD axle? I've just got underneath and had a look. I didn't notice any label on telling me to use LSD oil. I noticed a stamp in the rear axle casing, just above the filler/level plug which wasn't that clear, but I'm sure it says N2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, where would be the best place to buy a Rad from. Mine has got a crack in the top tank by the Rad cap. I saw Milners advertising one for about £160, are these any good?

    Thanks again. Andy

Hi mate, all the oil info is here....

    http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=62

The axle code is not an LSD axle, LSD are code 5 (the last number)

My personal recommendation for rads is Roughtrax for a Recon or new one (not cheap, but are genuine Toyota ones), the last two 'new' rads I fitted that came from Milners were certainly cheap, and thats about I would say.

Or if you can do without the truck for a few days, any good rad shop can put a new tank on the top if the rest of the rad is OK.

      Thanks Tony

I have got my Defender to run me to work, so can do without the truck. You say they are genuine Toyota rads. Are they cheaper than Toyota direct? I think they are about £350 from Toyota, but I will see if he will give me a good discount, then compare the prices.

for that money you could get yours re-corred, toptank repaired and concider a bigger bottom tank with a better atf cooler that doesn't obstruct the bottom outlet - if you want some details Pm me or email
Did I mention I have a BLUE one

Sounds interesting Fatfires. Any chance on some info. Bear in mind, it will have to be fairly local to me. I can now get a new rad from Toyota for £290 INC, that's with discount. Going to try Roughtrax, but will consider your idea also.

          Cheers mate.

            Cheers mate.
I had mine done by a local independant I understand he would be happy to do others if sent, dont know about cost with carrage ect but mine was aprox 200 all in
(my rad had not in fact gone I took it to him to test as I was doing a major re-build after a partial seasure) when he tested the rad you could see the whole thing flex (scary) and said that it was not as it shoud be, so he stripped it re-corred it with a 3 row staggered core I think he compared it to a Stag Rad spec, that was higher spec than the original while striping it down he tested the ATF cooler and found it had several minute leaks, and the design was suspect (parcially blocking the bottom outlet) see the ausie sites!
so in the hunt for a replacement ATF cooler, Toyota could not help with one or identify the heat exchange values and we could not obtain a patten part
he got hold of a Landy (I think disco turbo 90 one) and he fitted that into a custom made bottom tank 25mm deeper useing the old bottom hose and ATF spiggots, soldered it all together, tested, painted, the rest is history
when I rebuilt the engine I fitted a lower temp thermostat (part no's on ausie site) and put 2 tubes of silicone oil in the viscus fan(on ausie site as well)
the only problem encountered is that i have had to lower the bash plare 20mm at the front to ensure clearance
since fitting the engine has run a treat, doesn't get hot even when towing even with the boot down.
I was so happy with his service I did say that I would spread the word on the forum so a mention of tony from tavistock might be worth while if you decide to go that way
if you can find someone local who you know is good - I think you will need to look at independants and reccomendations I am sure a phone call to my man may be helpfull
He is Ken Allen on 01752 667704
I notice you said you had another vehicle you could use , so ken could be an option for you
hope this helps, have a look at the ausie site, they have realy looked at keeping these beasts cool, feel free to come back to me if you are unsure about anything, my contact details are in the members list
Best of luck with the project

If you want save a lot of aggro, ditch the in-rad AFT cooler completly, get a manual g/box rad, (or get yours rebuilt without the cooler in it) and fit a completely seperate AFT cooler.

I fitted a manual rad and a B&M supercooler to Jez's truck, and engine coolant temps dropped noticably when towing and driving hard.

Thanks for the very in depth response Tony.

Will definately consider it, as the rad had to come out at some stage. If I go to this guy, I will get in touch with you for advice. How long did it take the guy to do the job??

                  Thanks TonyN.

I've got an oil cooler on my Defender that sits in front of the rad, would this sort of oil cooler be ok? The B&M supercooler, where did you get it from and where did you mount it in his truck?

Andy - Tony wont be near a pc til Sunday night now!!
We get the ATF coolers from e-bay - a MG rad does a beautiful job for this and fits nicely behind the front bumper.! Tony got the supercooler from a shop near home - not sure where, but he'll be abel to tell you next week!
