If you use tape there will be a bit of work involved as you will need to remove the hard edge and also feather it into the shape of the hull. Any decent chandlers should be able to supply the tape and resin required, or where ever you get your gel from.
Also as a tip for Gel coat repairs if its just a scratch, get some POLWAX and cover the area to be repaired with it, then key up the repair and gel. Once the Gel has set with a sharp edge carefully cut off the excess, you can then polish up with G3 polish which should put the shine back in. this way you only end up with the gel in the scratch and not all over the surrounding area.
Wouldnt it be easier just to tell them "THEY WILL GET WET" thats what I do, Its like taking the surf out and keeping it CLEAN!! If they dont like it make them do the repairs!.
The other thing is stick to sandy beaches and not shingle.
