  • Oil Question (Yep, another one!)

I was in a local motoring shop yesterday and saw they had fairly cheap oil, all to the correct specs I may add, but all of the different ones on the shelf, i.e. mineral/semi synth/fully synth were suitable to be used for either petrol or diesel engines.

As I have never come across this stuff before, I would have normally bought one specifically for diesel, so can anyone tell me if this oil would be o.k. or best left alone?

    Cheers, Nick

      Dont touch it

I would leave it alone. Oil companies spend fortunes on R & D and producing quality lubricants with quality additives. They also refine their lubs to remove undesirables. You may find cheap stuff with the correct API specs etc but trust me on this, YOUR SURF DESERVES THE BEST Go for a brand you recognise from an oil major or a known specialist lub manufacturer. Ive seen quality lubs used in gas turbines still maintaining their viscosity, their TAN ( total acid) numbers and all their specs after as much as 30,000 and more running hours. Ive sen cheaper alternatives used by the penny wise, pound foolish operators having to be changed after 10,000 running hours as they have degraded completely. I beleive that when it comes to lubricants the old maxim that you get what you pay for is spot on, so please dont put any cheap no name stuff in the Surf. It deserves better. Regular oil changes using good oils are the key to engine life. If thats the only maintenance you ever do its , you are doing some good.

Ive just read that over, looks like Im getting a bit passionate , evangelical and carried away here, but Im a believer.

Agree with the above, use Castrol GTD magnatec in my diesel and the petrol one for the cars. Other than your house its your second biggest investment so look after it.

          Thought that was getting married?
Or is that the second biggest stress of your life?

Sorry Koi, my next biggest investment was my boat which gives me an equally large grin factor to the surf but at a much slower pace.....max speed flat out = 6 m.p.h.

But I do agree as regards the oil choice.
