Hey, can someone tell me about how the rear door opens on a surf? i dont have one yet, but i am hoping to get one soon. i have noticed a model over here where there is a single piece side-opening door. Is it just me, or is there another model where the rear door is like a tailgate and the rear window slides down into it?

The 2nd gen has a tailgate where the window drops into it, the 3rd gen has a tailgate that lifts up & and think the 1st gen is like the 2nd.

once again, thanks. does toyota make surf's over in england? they're really popular over here, but toyota doesnt make them here. also, does the rear window drop all the way into the tailgate?

They used to sell them here as 4runners, but most of ours are grey imports from Japan - they come here in a condition we wish cars had here (well most do)

It would be difficult to find a UK car with under 60,000 miles and 10 years old - mine (November 1993) had just under 50,000 in March 2004 when I got her, she now has 73,000

What does the term 'grey import' mean?

one reason they call them grey import is because of the lack of underseal underneath the vehicle the manufacturers never fully undersealed them like they do in uk because of the salt on the roads here... the centre of the underneath was left with its bare grey primer still... i think another is because of insurance companies not knowing what they were and it being a grey area for them to deal with!!!

Grey import = not officially imported by the manufaturer.

The term is applied to cars, almost anything - happily mr Toyota can help with parts etc thanks to it's near relative the 4runner.

Also the book used by us in Insurance is Caps Grey book for valueing imported vehicles , is GREY in colour !!

Ok. So, on the second gen (the model where the rear window drops into the tailgate), does the window drop all the way, or just most of it? Also, is there an inside lever to open the tailgate from inside the surf?

The tailgate can only be opened by lowering the window fully into the tailgate, before using the internal door lock and handle.

There is no external door lock or handle on a 2nd gen.

so, if there is no external handle, then whats the black part that hangs over the licence plate? is that just the enclosure for a license plate light?

Yep, although you can lower the window from the outside using a key.
