As I understand it, the 3rd gen has several 4wd modes, one of which keeps all the diffs open and is thus OK for on road use.Originally posted by kiowaevening all i have a 3rd gen 3.0td surf and just want to get some info on the 4x4 on it.does it still suffer with axel windup.can it be driven on the road in 4x4 many thanks matPaul </Slugsie>

Locking the center diff makes it the same as a 2nd gen in 4WD, no-no for hard surfaces, with the center diff unlocked, you have all-wheel-drive which is fine on the road. normally on the road you'd be in 2wd to save MPG and wear and tear.Originally posted by kiowai am pretty sure it is it,s a kzn185
