chrome
When I got my Surf it had chrome mirrors, bumpers,A bar etc, looked like I was part of the fair ground, its actually fairly easy to de-chrome,first off get rid of the A bar, sold mine on Ebay, got a very good match on the paint in aerosol form for a tenner ,removed mirrors, took out the glass, wet annd dried, used a good etching primer in aerosol (£15) and resprayed, good result.Same for the bumpers, used 800 grade w&d but used it dry, then used the etch primer then finished off with Satin black, the finished result is excellent and I no longer drive around in a vehicle that looks like a pimpmobile! Oh one other thing,I also removed the ridiculous little mirror on the wing, its dead easy to take off and I put a couple of rubber grommets in the bolt holes, looks ok,please do it! You know it makes sense!

2: Aim at Escort, where you would like the flames to start.
3: Press plunger on Spary Paint.
4: Hold match in front of spray can.
5: Let the Flames gently lick the body work.
6: Hold in one place until the escort can produce it's own flames.
7: Have a BBQ.
8: Phone the insurance and tell them it was electrical.
9: Spend insurance money on a Lift Kit for your Surf.

I'm also into the (slow) process of de-chroming.
I had all metal parts sand blasted, zinc coated and powder coated. Comes in every coulour you want these days and the finish is way better than years ago.
I grinded down the chrome on the mirrors up to barely touching the plastic. I could peel away most of the chrome metal layer, sand the plastic and paimted them using a plastic primer.
Still have to get ride of the chrome stripping sround the windshield.
Had my custom front bumper also done. I still need to make a new rear bumper. black powdercoated also offcourse.
This is what it looks like now:
