  • ICE experts on this forum?

I'm looking for some advice on equipment if anyone is any good with their ICE and you've got a couple of minutes to read what I'm after....

I'm upgrading the ICE in my truck - I figure if I have to go slow, I will go slow but loud

I just got a Kenwood KDC-PSW-9524 headunit for it and have some door builds that take 2 x 17cm speakers and one tweeter each side (to replace those rubbish 10cm jap paper units in the dash that exploded!!!)

I already have a set of nice Ultimate components but I can't get hold of these any more and because the door builds can take 2 x 17cm speakers I might as well get some that I can get another 17cm speaker to match. I can use the Ultimates in the back.

Having not done anything with ICE for a while, can anyone suggest a decent set of components for about £150? I don't mind spending the extra on top to get the second 17cm speakers to go with them. I'm after clarity rather then how loud they will go and mainly listen to dance but do listen to other stuff. I have a massive amp to power them. I've been recommended the Boston FS60 but wondered if anyone has these or knows an alternative?

I'm also looking for a decent 12" sub but not sure what to go for either. Any recommendations? It has to be a single as it needs to be easy to move in and out of the truck.

Basically, I'm looking to build a quality sounding system for a reasonable price. I'll spend the money where I need to but not looking to spending thousands on it.

Infintiy reference series, something like the 6000cs range, I have them in my runner.
Previously to that in my car I had Alpine DD speakers, they were good but due to the size of the magnet would not fit in the pods on the door on the runner so went for the Infinty's.
As for a sub I had the Alpine swr102d (1000w peak 300w RMS), its a 10" sub and sounds good. Alpine do the E, S & R range of subs, e being the cheaper end and r the better end, if you can afford an R then do so, you should be able to pick one up for around £130 give or take a tenner.
I found they were good without thumping out to much bass and drowning the music you were listening to.
Heard the rockfords etc and were to bassy for my liking.
Again all depends on the head unit and amp running it all, my head allowed me to control the sub seperately so i could turn the bass up and down, the amp had plenty of control of the gains for the speakers and sub as well.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

Personally i would recommend Focal Access 165a front components and a JL Audio 12" removable sub(already in the box).

The Focal's offer exceptional clarity and quality whilst the sub will give you the depth and bass.

Just a suggestion.(oh and you would need an amp too for the sub ideally)

I have to agree with the JL subs, I used to run a 12" Rockford and my mates JL sounded lovely in comparison - make sure you got dynamat!

Thanks guys. I've looked into this a bit more and certainly JL are the name for quality (always have been IMO) but certainly on the expensive side - I do like their subs though. Will have to see how far the budget will stretch. All reviews of the Boston equipment has been very positive indeed so I may still go that route. Choices, choices....!

Pauleds, the amp is mahoosive(!) - it's an 'Ultimate' one imported from the States, about 2.5ft long and in the past has powered 3 subs and a set of components without any fuss at all. It has outputs for all the speakers and a seperate dedicated sub output too. You might be right though if I decide to run the other components in the rear...

Thanks for the advice though guys.

any chance of a few pics when youve finished the build matey,i am using 4 ohm eminence omega 18 drivers in mine now different to photos but not expensive and real true rms specification http://www.eminence.com/,boss is ok for sub power but give the jls a treat if you buy them, but if you decide for another cheaper alternative in subs look for the excursion stats as well as the watts but look for rms watts not peak, front door buids you are limited but infinity drivers are probs the best pounds for watts.make sure you get your sub cabinet the right dimensions for best results,
              good luck matey

Yes, I will be coming to Salisbury, but there's no chance of me getting it all done before then as I still need to make up my mind what to get and will be working this weekend unfortunately !

I'm checking out all your recommendations though guys!

Photos when done shouldn't be a problem.

just chuck my 2 pence in......

If you are going to soundproof the truck use brown bread instead of dynamat. It will do the same job and is loads cheaper although not as easy to apply. A roll is £100 for 10m. (I'm doing the floors sides back and doors at the moment)

Comps, depend on what you like listening to, second hand £150 will buy you a good set something along JL XR's, DLS, Phoenix Gold Elites or you might even find some morels, dynaudio etc if your lucky.

Subs - have a look at RE, ID, even try powerbass very impressed with there demo van and the subs are cheap.

I can make it over to salisbury on friday evening if you want to chat about ice
