    I am hoping to buy a Surf, 1997 R reg,3.0 D auto SSR -X facelift on K49 miles.Price is £8500(private sale).Can I ask your advice as follows please .

    Does the price look ok?

My insurers(Cornhill) dont want to know but referred me to Adrian Flux who gave me a price of just under £300 including class 1 business use.Are they a sound company?

The seller said it is a 5speed auto,I thought they were all 4 speed -is he right?

I an going to tow a caravan of about a ton - 1300Kg,will it need an oil cooler or anything ?

Can you get a caravan hitched easily on the tow bar under the door mounted spare?

How often should they be serviced?

Will most garages have service charts?

It has a roof spoiler but no mirror which would help with hitching a caravan-can one be fitted?

Where can I get a spare wheel cover?

Sorry about all these but I like the look of it and you enthusiasm has rubbed off on me.Thanks for you patience in reading this -any advice would be gratefully received.

Does the price look ok? About the going rate for this reg year

My insurers(Cornhill) dont want to know but referred me to Adrian Flux who gave me a price of just under £300 including class 1 business use.Are they a sound company? Quite a few members use this company with no problems another company which specilises in imports is A Plan

The seller said it is a 5speed auto,I thought they were all 4 speed -is he right? This is a 3rd Gen model and as far as I know (I have a 3rd Gen) it is a 3 speed auto box. Then you have the overdrive button on top of that so I suppose you could say 4 speed if pushed.

I an going to tow a caravan of about a ton - 1300Kg,will it need an oil cooler or anything ? I tow a very big twin axle van with no problems what so ever, but there is nothing like heat for stuffing an auto box so I and again many others have an additional oil cooler fitted for towing.

Can you get a caravan hitched easily on the tow bar under the door mounted spare? No problem with the hitching if you only have standard hitch. However if you have the Alko SSK hitch head you have to swing the wheel out prior to hitching. But it is only a minor inconvienience

How often should they be serviced? Every 10,000 Kilometres

Will most garages have service charts? Main agents will, however specilist 4X4 garages will be able to get parts from the likes of Milners or RoughTrax

It has a roof spoiler but no mirror which would help with hitching a caravan-can one be fitted? Not really necessary just drop the rear window while reversing

Where can I get a spare wheel cover? Any large size fabric one should stretch to fit or buy a dedicated one from RoughTrax

I am totally happy with my Surf both solo and when towing and would not hesitate to buy another if anything should happen to this one. Just do it will will not regret it. Best 4x4 in the world and the grin factor is priceless

Just one amendment, oil changes are every 5000km (3000miles) then every other one its oil & oil filter, these are the recommended changes.
      5000km......oil
      10,000km...oil & filter
      15,000km...oil
etc etc, you get the idea
Personally I change the oil filter every time I change the oil.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

Yea, I have the same snag, whenever someone uses black or red or another dark font against the already dark background, I have to select and highlight it in order to read it, mind you I am a wee bit color-blind (somewhere around 8% of all males are apparently), so figured it was just my problem

Just drag-select over the text. Bingo, white on blue and you can read it even on my crappy monitor. (7" TFT in the truck)

I have checked again and he insists that it has a rare 5 speed auto box!

It is not undersealed .I live in the Derbys hills which get a lot of winter salt-is it essential to underseal and is it expensive?

undersealing shouldn't be more than £100, but make sure its properly cleaned off first. Also 2 Very important points:

Make sure you underseal in the summer when the chassis is bone dry.
Make sure Waxoyl is used. The Bitumen based Bodyschutz and the rest just trap moisture and do more harm than good.

On the plus side a good Waxoyling leaves the chassis all shiny and black (if you use black waxoyl). You should then really get it done every year or so.
