Advice please broke my surf

Hello all,
Managed to break the engine on my 92K 2.4TD Surf by running it with no oil
The car is otherwise mint so I need to fix it.
Can't find an engine and even if I do it will be expensive.
One option is to buy my mates Surf, has a broken head and he can't afford to fix it, so will sell for £1300. This will leave me with my Surf working after an expensive fix, plus an engineless Surf.
Please help
Does anyone have a cheap engine available or know where I can get one?
If I go with my plan what can I do with an engineless surf?
Am I in the proverbial?

You could allways sell the parts of the spare Surf that you'll have...

Lots of people on here after various spares etc. for their Surfs. Sell the bits off the other one. I need a towbar. Got one available???
