I'm probably asking something that is answered in various parts on this site,

But I am looking for info on the HiLux range.
Such as, is there one website list all HiLux surf available?
Maybe with info, such as MPG etc

I have been looking at them, but want to know which is the best for me
i.e Best MPG for motorway driving.
Which versions are better than others etc
when did the new versions come in, i,e what reg

Whilst that site seems good for an overview, be aware it appears to contain many inaccuracies,
For example, it claims performance is identical for all petrol & diesel models, turning circle identical between 2nd & 3rd Gens, ABS, and free wheeling hubs standard on 2nd Gen, 7 speakers on 3rd Gen....to point out just a few..... I'm sure there are probably more errors too.....

Was just thinking the same thing. Is that right? Never seen a quoted 0-100km (62mph) other than that one.

Hi, just thought i would list the specifications from top of the range to bottom of the range.

The new model (3rd Gen) started at 1996, but you may find an old 1995 registered model the same shape. I get around 25mpg out of my 96 3.0 diesel. For MPG i would go for a diesel, as you should get much more MPG than the petrol on a car like the surf. If you do a search on the internet, you'll find alot more accurate info than this.

I'm new to this too and looking for a Surf/4runner hav'nt a clue where to start .So far I have heard that if you plan on doing a lot of towing you probly go 4 a diesel. Any help from members gratefully recieved.

Hi,

Just thought i'd tick my oar in (oo-err!). The diesels are the only way to go, and if money doesn't matter, go for a 3.0td. general concensus is the mpg for the 2.4 and 3.0 is about the same. the main difference being the 3.0's cost a bit more. The model (ssrx,ssrg) doesn't mean too much, as the japs slap on whatever extras they fancy onto almost any model, so you need to ask what each car has got individually.

I recently bought mine after years of highspeed cars (Nissan Skyline for sale by the way!), and I don't regret it. it's a proper tonka toy that you can go anywhere, and take anything. Oh yeah, and everyone gets out of your way.

the third Generation started lte 1995 so 95 models will be late 2nd gen's or early third gens..

SSRX SSRG- main difference is recarro seats.. cant remember which way round it is! other than that its about the same

You'll generally find the standard Jap radio's and 12 disk changers don't work... if you can find one with an english radio already in it its a bonus!

MPG is about the same accross all models (except petrol which high) 2.4/3.0 2nd and 3rd gens all range from about 22-28mpg.. dependant on the weight of your right foot!!

comfort wise (and looks aswell, a personal opinion) 2nd gens are far more comfy!! third gens are quite stiff, for want of a better word!

prices vary hugely, have a good shop around (try the for sale section on here)

there is a lot of talk about head problems on the 2.4's.. the only reason it seems so bad is because its coverd so often! some model have a weak head which cracks when overheated - once modified head had been put on that'll be the end of your troubles.. if buying from a dealer ask for paperrwork showing the head had been changed for a modified one - if they can't provide this ask for a warranty on the head - any decent dealer shold be fine withg this..

other than that its the same as any other car - pick your best option and take your chances!!

Thanks man that backs up everything I heard so far . I'm thinking auto , which to some degree is personal taste , but what is the best box to go for , does the auto have any major probs . I heard the stick shift is a bit clunky ? Is the wide body really much bigger. How much load space in the rear (is there a pic posted anywhere) and how much KG can it haul ? Again any help greatly appr.
