All depends on the course, fairly flat, big ruts, hills etc etc.
From the RR I have seen at devils pit I would go for the Surf, I have pulled two off humps at the pit in my surf that i then and many others in Surfs have just driven over.
But then hes spending max of 2k and yours is worth more so you got the bottle to really chuck it round, so based on this I assume he don't give a s**t about the RR so will be more bullish, so would probably win.

only twice... and that wasent verry off road... verry sandy but not verry off road...(had some fun flooring it and massive arcs of sand and getting no were fast... didnt get stuck tho...)
Make sure you have the same tyres, most Surfs have A/T's or road tyres, most older Rangies usually have something more aggressive. Unless your on the same tyres its no contest.
If its a V8 look for water, they don't like it The Rangie has far more front suspension flex, and a better departure angle.
But the Surf will still be working after you've finished!

About price ask him to go out and buy a UK 4x4 for the same price £7k age and roughly mileage and then get them independently looked at by the same examiner and ask him which is in better shape no contest
