  • GPS Mapping Software

Ok so ive been reading about all the different mapping software for PDA based GPS systems, I am a bit limited as im on a Sony Clie (Palm OS5) but there are some Bluetooth recievers but im confused on the map front.
Does anyone have and good bad points of software? TomTom, Navman etc etc.

    Thanks
    Tim

I use the Medion Navigator that came with my PDA for road based navigation, and Memory Map for Offroad activities.

Memory Map allows me to create runs on a PC then transfer them to the PDA for use, it also can track you so you can keep a record of that run for future use.

One of the guys being me Saw the PDA setup in the car - looked sweeet!
Tom Tom not only seems nice but is usually the cheapest too... I just need to find a version that I can definitely install onto a Sony MS.
        Thanks

I use the Navman hardware sleeve with my iPaq which is handy in that it is completely self-contained and can be transferred between my vehicles easily, but if I did it again I would probably go for a seperate GPS reciever - it means you can mount it right up front on the dash where its most visible (or even use an external reciever, say mounted on the roof which would give you the best signals).

I stopped using the actual Navman software though - now moved to TomTom navigator, its much better in most respects and the 3D view is not just a gimmick it is actually really useful.

I also use the Memory-Map software for occasional off-roading trips (and is actually very useful general mapping software for your PC anyway). Only bugger about this was that when you want to upgrade the Memory Map software your maps that you paid lots of money for don't work on the new software (i.e. they try and force you to buy new maps!). Unless you work out a way around this...

Dunno if you seen the info on my site, a bit old now but may be of some use:

Cheers mate, so TomTom seems the way to go at the moment.,.. anyone used ViaMichelin?
I will have to go the Bluetooth route as there is only one Cabled system for Palms and doesnt include my Clie. Good though as I can mount anywhere in the car including the dash although I might try and stick it up where the rear view mirror is and run an external atenna. Im looking at Emtac recievers at the moment.
I had already read your sites stuff but cheers for a refresh.
