  • Surf SSR Roof Rack

    Hi

I am looking for a roof rack for a G-reg Surf SSR. The web sites I've checked don't mention this exact model.

Any suggestions on where I could look?

    Thanks

    Tim (Newbie)

If yours is the same as mine (2.4 auto LN130 without roof rails) then Halfruads do them, or rather they list them for the 4Runner from Thule, I warn you now they are not cheap.
    Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

      Surf SSR roof rack

Mine is a G-reg 2 litre automatic petrol with no roof rails.

Please excuse my ignorance: is a 4Runner the same as a Surf SSR?

      Cheers

To my knowledge, all Surfs are SSRs. The different original specs are designated by the letters or words after the SSR. There are SSR-Gs, SSR-Limiteds (like mine), etc.

        http://showmesome.info/hilux/info/faq.htm

It seems that roof rails or roof bars are rare on any model.

I think both of these guys supply roof rails, and you should be able to fit generic roof bars over the doors with the correct fittings.

Are you sure your engine is a 2 litre?

I think the "2L" is the name of the engine, not the size.

Some others on here may have more info than me, but here's how I understand it...

        2L is a 2446cc non-turbo non-injection diesel (maybe late '80s to early '90s?)
2LT is a 2446cc turbo non-injection (or possibly manual (rather than electronic) injection) diesel (early '90s?)
2LTE is a 2446cc turbo electronic injection diesel (early to mid '90s?)

There was also a 2.8 litre petrol and a 3.0 litre diesel.

As far as I'm aware there wasn't a 2 litre petrol, at least as standard, but someone else may correct me...

        Hope this helps

There was the Option for a 2 Lite Petrol - 3Y or 3YE engine - very rare.

As far as roof bars go, all second generation Surfs are bidy wise the same as a 4Runner which was the name for the Surf outside of Asia.

Halfords do bars that clamp on over the door - about £50 as far as i remember, Thule also do them and they are a little bit more expensive.

you can buy roof rails from a number of places however i got mine - Arrigoni and DeAngelis Ironfly bars from 4x4accessoriesandtyres. Thes mount from above using nutserts and are easy to fit especially if you don't have the factory roof rack - you can then fit them full length with no problems and then get roof bars from Halfords for cars with factory roof rails.

          Cheers

            Thanks for the replies guys.

I didn't receive any extra documenation with the vehicle but the registration
document states that it is a 1999cc petrol - it certainly drives like one! It is a 1990 model SSR Limited "Off Road Express".

Sorry for another dumb question but what is a second generation SSR?

            Cheers

Surfs cam in first <1990, second <1996, Third <2004 and 4th Generation. Most of the ones you will see will be 2nd or 3rd Gen.

SSR is the trim level - SSR being the base model - in the US and other parts you will find it called SR5 with the only optional model being the Limited.

              In Japan you had

              SSR
              SSRV
              SSRX
              SSRG

with a smattering of limiteds thrown in for good measure. Trim level generally means diddly squat as there were so many options available that a lot of SSRX are pretty much the same as Gs and so on.

              Cheers

                Andy,

How long are these "full length" roof rails - I've seen them on the website, but there's no full pic, just cropped shots.

What I really want to know is; is there enough room in the length for both a luggage basket or a pair of cross bars AND two bicycle carriers (the type that clamp the wheels and carry the bikes vertically)?

Have you any pics of your Surf with the rails fitted?

                    SSR Roof Rack

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

I settled on a Thule roof rack system, which is intended for a 4-Runner but fits perfectly. For the record the parts needed for a 1990 model 5-door Hilux SSR are:

                    Thule 1085, 750, 761

                    Total cost £90

                    Cheers

                      Mark.

They come as standard with a 1 Metre length. I actually got some stainless tube and extended mine so that they run the whole length of the roof. Unless you have a very small basket I don't think the roof itself is long enough for a basket and two bikes, think the bikes will take up at least 2/3 of the roof length.

I'll take some pictures when the weather improves.

                      Cheers
