  • Wheel bearing check

Just a couple of questions people

Whats the best way to check if my front wheel bearings are shot.I checked them today for the first time and they were both really loose.I lightened them up and it was better but I think that they might already be on their way out as im getting a constant hum at higher speeds.

I also want to change all the bushes on the front suspension does anyone have a list of what ill need.

Also i need to get a set of new tyres anyone got any good recommendations or places to get them cheap .

Damnim really getting into this DIY maintenance stuff now. ( the missus hates it coz my hands are never clean anyways being a heating engineer)

    cheers

Hi mate - www.mytyres.co.uk was dirt cheap for me!
My 31" Bridgestone Duelers A/T were £82 each inc. delivery! I doubt you will find cheaper, I can get some tyres trade and that is much cheaper

Oh yeah the tyres are good too

Are you sure the hum isn't tyres?

As long as the rolling surfaces arn't pitted, fresh grease and a tighten should be OK.

The front bearing arrangement is a pair taper roller bearings per wheel. So as Toney says a re-grease and/or tighten is usually enough. Do not over tighten though.

If i remember right you tighten them up then back off the nut and then retighten.

I did have the torque wrench settings somewhere!!!

            cheers

tighten it up to 59NM, spin the hub, loosen the nut till its hand tight, then tighten it again to 25NM.

if you have a spring tension guage (thing for weighing fish) put it over a wheel lug and check the preload, the gauge should pull out to 2.9-5.7kg to turn the hub.

then fit the lock washer, tighten to 47nm.

then recheck the preload with the spring guage.

stake the lock washer to both nuts, put wheel on and go and play in the mud.

sad init, don't even have to look in the book anymore!

They didn't make a fuss, so we figured with what they actually did before the fuss was probably worth the £100 we gave them.

Mike - For tyres try Micheldever Tyres near Andover. They generally have good prices.

I have BFG A/T's - love them but can be pricey, or Kumho - got MT's on a couple of trucks, they are cheap but wear well. Kumho AT's are a bit noisier than more expensive tyres tho.
