It's normal to have a fair resistance when cold because the oil settles. As it warms up there is less resistance so the fan is not spinning at engine revs all the time. When it gets to operating temperature it will lock up and spin at engine revs for a period of time until the temperature drops. When it does you should hear it.If your cooling system is in good condition this may not happen very often.Mine rarely locks up even when I was out west and it was 43 deg.Originally posted by Valleys boyhad my 96 3ltr for two weeks no probs so far a bit confused about the viscous fan on this model, i've read the threads but could someone put my mind to rest as to how it should work it seems to have some drag when cold but seems more free after a several miles. The temp gauge doesn't go above half so far and i just love it, sorry to bore you just need advise, cheers all

My temp also never goes over half way - usually a little below. The fan runs when starting off from cold in the morning for a few seconds (you can hear it revving up) then is always disengaged. Never had any weather hot enough to hear it cut in again yet.
Cheers

mine cuts in and out when I throttle it around town stop start (usually flat out between london speed humps!) and you can feel the thing going also it sounds like a plane!
occasionally have the little fan running if I stop after a long run when towing just for a moment or so.Tim

The silicone oil in these fans can all leak out after ten years or so. If in doubt get it checked. You can buy the refill oil from Toyota dealers for £8 per 25ml bottle. You need two to fill up the fluid clutch mechanism.Originally posted by Valleys boyhad my 96 3ltr for two weeks no probs so far a bit confused about the viscous fan on this model, i've read the threads but could someone put my mind to rest as to how it should work it seems to have some drag when cold but seems more free after a several miles. The temp gauge doesn't go above half so far and i just love it, sorry to bore you just need advise, cheers all
