Some improvement, though it feels as though I am driving with brakes on, hand brake is definitely off ,steering wheel feels heavy, as auto transmission goes through the gears very sluggish still and it seems that top gear is not being reached. Engine after 40 mph seems to roar, feels and sounds normal when decreasing speed. Can now reach top speed of 70 mph at a push.
garage still at a loss. At this rate evrything will be put right except for initial problem.
      Any ideas anyone?
Hi where you say "feels like driving with brakes on and steering feels heavy" have you knocked into "4WHEEL DRIVE".

I have had a look at the truck for B19 AUS tonight and have been out for a drive. The box isnt changing up through the gears, it seems to be hanging onto the lower gears, i assumed that the kickdown was stuck on, the cable from the throttle linkage has about 10mm of free play before it feels like it does anything and when at full throttle you can pull it about another 10 mm before it stops, is this right????
We also switched ECT on which made it change a bit smoother and also the kickdown began to work when you floor it which it didnt do when not in ECT mode.
The wheels are all free rolling, no resistance, O/D light works so that should be working but we didnt get a stretch of road clear enough to get past 70, it was still pulling well but just hanging onto gears for too long so couldnt see if it changes into top.
Is it likely to be a faulty kickdown in the box? or could it be a vacuum sensor problem? all help gratefully received.

          .
With the engine off, the cable goes very slack, with the engine running should be tighten up.

Cheers Tony, cable is the same engine running or not, would this be a fault in the box?? It has a circlip over a cover plate next to where the cable goes in, would this be where the problem lies and do you know if the bits are serviceable????

Not sure, I'm only going by Linda's 3.0, our 2.4 is a stick so it may be different, would be better for someone to check with a 2.4 auto first.

I'd be tempted to look for other things, its only the kickdown, if it was busted, you'd only notice it when trying to accerate hard and it would stay in the gear it was in, the box should change up and down quite happily without it. I never connected it after doing the V8 in my pickup, as the motor had plenty of torque and rarely needed to change down. If you shift down on the lever it'll do the same thing.

I've got some stuff on adjusting the kick down cable, will have a look tomorrow. (going to bed now! )

Tony, what i am wondering is whether the kickdown could have got "jammed" on, it seems to hold the gears for too long regardless of how much throttle is applied

                          Latest news on the truck

Despite Smurf's valiant efforts, 2 garages have confirmed that play in kickdown cable is ok.They reckon that problem lies with gears not going up so kickdown is c@@p as the gears are not high enough for kickdown to happen and select a lower gear. Have booked in next Fri at auto electrics in Southend who will run a diagnostic on ECU to try and identify problem.

Gonna rename the surf LIMAHL co its a neverending story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got back from the auto elec and need help. I need to identify thermoststat cable that should be somewhere on the block. We found the one to the dash, but AE reckons that if I can find other one that goes from block to gearbox, then he can test wiring rather than go into gearbox as he says that this should be last plan of action.
Must say that it nice to go to a specialist and not get ripped off. he spent half an hour in the car and road tested her and did not want to charge anything. He really rates Surfs so I suppose that helps.

If any of you can help me will appreciate it
                                Thanks
