How long can you leave it in 4WD?

I know I shouldn't ask this question but it would be interesting to know different opinions of how long can one drive permanently in 4x4 mode.

Currently driving a WRX, it is permanently AWD, however when one has the option of switching to 2WD or 4WD; is the any harm in leaving it in 4WD for everyday use i.e. up to 40 - 50 MPH speeds reversing, parking etc.

Sorry if I come across a little amateur, I'm still learning after understanding (I think) about locks, diffs and drive shafts etc (but still a novice).

If you have a 2nd Gen do NOT leave it in 4WD when on the Black stuff - you will wind up the transmission.
