  • Looking to buy a surf

Hi guys, just thought I drop a note.

I'm here mainly because I am looking to buy a surf this year to replace my current vw passat. The reason? I've always liked the surf, and a growing family means I would like something other than a saloon.

So, what should I be looking for? I am on quite a budget (about £4k to purchase) and am looking for decent running costs, so no big engined petrols. Currently my passat will go 300 miles on a tank (which is about £40-45). Which is the best version to go for (2.4 TD?)? What should I look for? Anyone in my area who might be able to help?

Sorry for all the questions, just regurgitating my thoughts into a badly written post. Hopefully they'll get better as I learn more.

Try a search for your answers it is a commonly asked question.
    For a little starter,
Running costs mpg wise for the 2.4 & 3.0 is negligable, you should see around 25mpg depending on journeys and the heavy right foot. The 3.0 will offer more power and better or more comfrtable higher cruising speeds (80+) bigger engine scenario like all cars.
2.4 has some trouble with the heads cracking, not all suffer this problem and if you find one with a NEW head fitted then you should see trouble free motoring.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

      Neil,

As Koi said use the search on the forum, I work at Gatwick and found mine in Horley (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/) before I found this forum.....was very lucky to have got a good'un, I would read-up lots on this site before parting with any money, but do look at what people have said about dealers and test drive a few as a bad un is obvious only after driving and looking at a real good surf.

      Happy hunting

Any opinions on the budget? Would this suffice for a good'un?

I paid £4K for my 93 2.4 SSR-X Auto, but as I say, I was lucky, when I was looking with my £4K I found mainly 92's in my budget and to be honest I would go for a good 92 rather than an OK 93.......it's a Toyoa so age is nothing to be worried about, they just keep going in my experience.

mmmm.... negligable for me is about £2000 per year in diesel!

I think what Koi meant was the difference between running costs of the 2.4 and 3.0L diesel was negligable- i.e. mpg is roughly the same for both engine types. This is somewhere between 20-28mpg depending on what you're doing.

So would something such as this be seen as worth investigating?

Can't 100% tell but it looks like it got the saggy arse syndrome, new rear springs needed.
