How to gain knowledge of Diffs, locks, 2WD & 4WD

Where is it best to read to gain an understanding of

- Wheel differential
- Locks
- Gearing selection when off road and not
- Switching between 2WD and 4WD

I have a WRX at the moment which is AWD, but it will take me a greater depth of undertsanding when to switch over to 2WD and 4WD on a Surf and to have switched on/off the diff locks... its all a mystery to me, I have never had to worryabout these things before...

Maybe it's because I have never needed to know this... please point me in the right direction.

Great site! Now I know why my truck was kicking like a muel and heavy as a heavy thing with heavy bits on it when trying to turn in 4wd. Not that I'm a 4wd novice or anything...
