The Surf has landed!

Arrived in Durban SA, brought up to Jo'burg and then up to Zimbabwe. Only problem is our @rsehole of a shipping agent put petrol in my diesel engined truck! He did not disclose this to us but we found a receipt from the AA in the side pocket: diagnosis: "petrol in diesel". I haven't started it yet as I have to get it checked by a mechanic but what sort of problems can I expect?

Fuel Pump

A contact of mine did that by mistake. It stuffed the fuel pump up. Aparently, the fuel pump is the most delicate bit on a diseal, as precise as a watch he was told, and the diseal fuel keeps it lubricated, while petrol dries it and causes bits to perish and seize.

Jeez! A fuel pump is an expensive bit of kit! Last time I had a quote for a new fuel pump it cost as much as a cheap Ebay surf!

Did this to my Freelander
RAC sorted it, but did say they had a list of cars where they won't, they either have to go in for an injection pump or in case of BMWs a new engine!!!
Thank heavens I had the Rover engine not a later TD4. Since then I've done 10,000 miles no problem incliding an MOT amonth ago with the same smoke test results as last time, so all seems to be well. I would think if the AA fixed your it should be OK, unofficialy the mechanic recomended a dose of veg oil when I filled up (they only put a gallon in)to ensure the pump had plenty of lube. Hope this helps.

Great news that it arrived, shame about the petrol in the diesel. You may be lucky as long as the AA drained the tank out and didn't leave the fuel to stand in the system and dry out everything. You might want to put some Diesel treatment in (one that has a lubricant and cleaner in it) and run it through the system - couple of 500ml bottles in 1/2 tank should do it. That might just save the pump. Apart from that there would be unlikely to be much damage hopefully.

Where I used to work we bought a used 00' Merc Sprinter, the fuel pump died on it not long after getting it. First thing the deisel guy said was "its had petrol in it in the last year."

You may be OK with an older Surf, but new stuff don't petrol at all.

The shippers need a word with anyway........

I'll sue the shipper because he has behaved in a very un-professional manner during this whole affair even before we discovered the receipt in our truck.

What I am afraid of is the mounting costs: new injectors and a fuel pump are going to really hurt us...it's money we just don't have. SA salaries are 2/3 of what they are in the UK and I still haven't found a job so we are surviving on my wife's salary. I'll definately sue the b@stard coz I need the money!

Well the vehicle is definately overfueling and so it looks like I may have to:

Service/Change injectors

Service/Change Injector pump

Not a cheap job if I get it done by my local Toyota stealer. If I buy new then a non-Toyota mechanic can just drop the new items in...is this correct?

You can get refurbished injectors from ukcylinderheads, not sure if they would ship but I just got a set for £70 and they are spot on, don't take that long to change for anyone who is handy with a spanner. Injector pump is a bit mor complicated and time consuming but I am sure that a non toyota mechanic could do it no problem.

glad to to see your family and the 4Runner made it okay (well almost).

I wouldn't worry too much about the petrol in the diesel. I put 10 litres of petrol in once before realising. Then I topped up with 40 litres of diesel. Then I added more diesel as often as I could. No problems to report after a year or so! In fact I think it probably cleaned out the injectors!

Drain the tank if you can. Fill up with diesel to dilute and don't worry!

I'm embarresed to drive it at the moment, clouds of black smoke every time I change gear! That and the fact that it is costing me dearly in fuel - it's gotta be at least 45p a litre here in SA!

Hell, in Zim it's more like 30p! Problem is either you spend all day in a queue waiting for for your "ration" or you buy it on the black market at 2 or 3 times that rate...
