Hi, I have had a fair amount of Hilux pick-ups over the years and used them mostly for work which is off-road. The main thing I had to renew was the rear springs. They seemed to break quicker when the back was unloaded, probably going over rough ground all the time. Used to carry a concrete slab in the back.

The pick-up was prone to 'stepping out' at roundabouts more than the Surf. However, they are great for towing and hardly ever broke down. I had my last one for 8 years and all I needed was new batteries and a universal joint and as mentioned quite a few rear springs. My double cab was one of the first in Scotland and was a 2.8lt. I did loads of towing heavy loads and it never overheated no matter how hard it was worked.

I thought about a pick-up or a Surf - what made me buy a Surf is that the pick-up is a lot higher at the back for loading which is a problem for me being a short ar*e.
