  • Alarm system

I am going to get one fitted as I currently don’t have an immobiliser etc fitted.

My question is has anyone had any problems getting an alarm fitted due to the Surf being an import?

I would love to get a Clifford alarm with remote start, can anyone see any problems with this being fitted to a 1990 2.4 Surf???

    Thanks

    Paul

Had no problems getting one fitted, in fact the insurance would'nt even consider the surf (92 ssr-x) without one (imob or alarm) went for imobiliser for now and will do full job later on

I have recently had a "toad" alarm immobiliser fitted to my 1992 SSR-G, the guy fitting it had to fit another motor into the central locking system because only the drivers side door operated the central locking, other than that there were no problems. Locking and alarm setting now off the fob.
Direct line wouldn't cover it for theft or attempted theft without a thatcham approved alarm fitted.

According to the ALARM Fitters Tech book it advises against immobilising the FUEL PUMP as this can cause problems.

I got a thatcham cat.1 immob and alarm fitted, the only snag was it interfered with the turbo timer. Turbo timer gone and no probs. My insurance company also required me to have either cat.1 or cat.2 fitted.

Only problem I could see apart from Turbo timers, would be the fact that the wiring colours sometimes confuse people. Apart from that it should be OK. Also if you get one that gives you remote operation of the central locking, you need one that supports negative pulse operation.

                Cheers

Apparently turbo timers and remote start alarms (I asked about the clifford) can't be certified as Thatcham CAT1 as you can leave the engine running with the vehicle unattended which is deemed insecure.

This is what I was told by the people who fitted my Toad CAT 2 immobiliser (it already had a fairly decent, recently fitted Toad alarm on it).

Also - my Surf unlocks itself when the engine stops, which means if you leave it on the turbo timer then lock the door, it's going to be unlocked within a few minutes!

They were reluctant to fit the immobiliser and certify it CAT 2 with the turbo timer but I argued that I'd told them it had one when I'd booked the appointment - a manager was consulted and they agreed to do it.

It seems to be wired to the door switch now - the immobiliser is activated when I open the door.

Just had a clifford Concept 650 fitted today at work, the fitter said he could incorporate the turbo timer into the alarm but I decided to let him remove it instead as I had it switched off anyway.
I now can open and close the rear window from the keyfob, It'll probably take me another 3 weeks to understand all the rest of the features.
                      Cost £350 all in.
Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.

Been talking to the alarm people, you are correct remote start will invalidate the CAT 1 alarm.
So going to go for the Concept 650, might see about remote start later as an add-on but will have to see depends on what the insurance say.

Do you have to keep the key fob pressed while the window is opening? I may be paranoid but prolonged activation could leave you open to "code grabber" devices. Copied the below from here

Code Grabbers and Scanners Compromise Your System’s Security

Today’s high-tech thief uses the duplicated security signal generated by the code grabber to gain unauthorized access into your home, automobile or business. Thieves can wait unseen several hundred feet away while you use your remote-keyless-entry system and still capture your system’s transmitted code. Once the code has been retrieved, they can simply retransmit the code to unlock your car door. Or worse, they can drive into your garage and close the door behind them, gaining easy access to your home, your valuables and your loved ones. In a cruel twist, if you are unaware that burglars gained entry by this method, they can strike again several months after your insurance has replaced all of the stolen items
                          .

Scanners don't work on modern CAT1 alarms because they use a rolling code system. Each time you operate the remote device a new code is generated for the next use and as this is not transmitted at the time of operation it can't be captured by a code grabber.

The code generation sequences to many systems especially Clifford and Toad are widely known by car thieves so if you display stickers on the car with the alarm make and model on them you are tempting fate.

A relief to know they can't be scanned, I'm just popping out to remove the TOAD stickers from me car though!
