    bike carrier

from one brand new surfer well 4 runner actually to one that is leaving would you mind a brief comment on the bike carrier.

I have a 1962 Lambretta and attend some of the rallies, however on the longer ones I prefer to tow as two's up with the misses can be hard work plus the potential for the inevitable breakdowns.

now then a mate with a van has fabricated a detachable roll-on on outrigger that fixes to the chassis at the rear of his transit size van. The carrier you have would not suit a scooter however is the surf well capapble of carrying that kind of load when extended over the back of the vehicle?

Thinking of doing one for the new truck!

    thanks

The weight of my current bike is probably about 120-130kg. The surf has no problems with that weight other than potentially compressing the rear springs too much and the front end sticking up in the air a bit. I have uprated rear springs and I also fitted 2" spring spacers which I needed to carry this sort of load. Even then the front end is a little too high (I know becuase at night with the bike on the back I get a lot of people flashing me as they think I have full beam on). Obviously any towbar or chassis mods need to be able to cope with the weight (a normal UK tow bar/ball may not be rated to that sort of nose-weight).

Sorry for the delay, I don't seem to be getting notified of replies here (although I did just get the bump one!).

Tim/Tony - I was kind of hoping someone would be interested in the hitch and the motorbike rack as one purchase as I guess I am going to be unlikely to sell the rack on its own in the UK, but I guess I might just have to try doing that.

As I said the hitch cost me £240. Not necessarily expecting to get back that as it is used and all but how about your best offers to me by PM?

Although delivery to Tony is going to be much easier as he is just down the road...

Codlord I have tried to Pm you, but I can't. I am really interested in the cargo box, as I have to carry medical equipment for work, and it would cover it perfectly. Can you pm me?

Interested in the bike rack to carry two Segways. How low does it go for loading. Also does it have to be pumped all the way up when loaded? This may be too high for the segways.
May also want the load box if it will fit my 1997 Surf.

Regarding the bike rack, do you have a US-style tow hitch? like this:

Not quite sure how low it goes - obviously depends on if you have any suspension lift. With my +2" suspension lift and +2" spring spacers I had to just lift my motorbike onto it slightly.

Cargo box - I suspect it won't fit the 1997 surf (at least not as well or not without adjustments) but I really don't know as I have never seen the inside rear of the 1997.
