I thought they were made mostly of aluminium as a way of getting them to reject their own body parts as fast as possible. Part of the British motor industry's drive for efficiency in the 70s - get things to fall apart faster.

From what i understand... range rover chassis are rock solid but the body rots. especially the tailgate..

defender chassis rots a treat but the panels are normally pretty sound.. unless water gets in the doors from a cr*p seal on the window an then they rot out pretty quick.

the body panels are all ally, but what they bolt onto are thin steel. plus where the ally is bolted, an electrolisis reaction or something happens and the ally corrodes away!

defender rear cross members rot away in a few years, much to my friends dismay.. he has an 04 90 defender and his rear crossmember has nearly gone on both ends!!

love the lr steel and ally,we have a disco commercial as our "off road"vehicle for the police contract,the rear quarters have stay bars made of steel,pop riveted to the quarters,or did have lol,its on its 3rd engine too,definatley an off roader!ie in the workshop

he went to a good home, the guy that bought it will sort out all the niggles and put some extra tlc into it and bob will rule again!!

only messin, mines goin on ebay next week... circumstances have changed and shes gotta go, pretty bummed like, only had her about 4 months but shes gotta go, i wouldnt mind aswell but since i have had her av done a fair bit (New Muds, new coated wheels, brand new full CB radio, full set of boxed procomp 2" shocks to go on, sum new kawasaki green LC springs, boots, spring top mounts, all new, had all the windows blacked out, sum quality seat covers, fire extinguisers and glass hammers the lot an i have only done about 1500 miles in her guttered ... haha

With Tax and Test i should well get 2500 for it ................... shouldnt i haha ?

I was wondering why you were selling up so soon! Mines just gone on Ebay.. its been on pistonheads for a while but its always offer of car + cash.. I really just need the cash! To buy the car i want!
