Auto trans fluid

Before the big trip i checked properly this time the transmission fluid and found it was about an inch above the hot mark with the engine cold, so i drained off an icecream tub full and it was then between the cool marks' it was also dark red verging on brown so i want to change it, been checking the threads and understand Duckhams Dextron111 is what i should get, question is how much does the box take from empty (drain plug on the box sump) ? does this drain all of it (from the cooler, if there is one)? also understand there is a magnetic filter that should be washed out, where is that located?, any other special things to do on a oil change Cheer's in anticipation, Ian

Dexron 11 is what is recommended (Dexron111 superseeds dexron 11) and can be used I believe but Dexron 11 is readily available. Any make will do as long as it meets Dexron 11 spec. Personally I use Comma.

I asked this same question a while since Ian. It's a pig to check. Take it for
a couple of mile run to get the engine upto temp, park up, leave engine running,
move gear lever between each gear and leave for several seconds, pop back
into park position, leaving engine running, then check oil level.

Cheer's guys, How about the ammount, as it's off colour (burnt?) i'm going to change it, how much should i buy? is it best to drain it when it's hot or after it's been standing (cold)? Ian

When I changed my transmission oil, I checked the price of Dexron III at Halfords. A 1 litre bottle was £8-99. I needed 5 bottles (£45.00).

Thanks to another post I phoned a few Oil & Grease Distributors. The prices quoted varied enormously. I bought a 20 litre drum of TEXACO Dexron 3 (Texamatic 7045E) for just over £2-00 per litre delivered (approx £42.00). Bargain.

Thanks Gerard, i'll make a note of that, still aint got round to changeing the whole lot, just drained it and refilled, i still cant see the sence in just adding new fluid to old, sort of defeats the object if you know what i mean, and yet it seems to be such a performance to replace the whole lot Also i could do with some to add to the deisel as it's supposed to be good for cleaning the injectors etc,
Did you collect it or get it sent? wondering if it's worth going to get it or get it shipped, (i'm near portsmouth)

Drive the truck till it is up to normal oprating temp. Then check the oil with the engine RUNNING.

I use Comma Dextron 11 (Dextron 11 is the Toyota recommended oil)

Drain the system using the drain plug. While your at it, drain the transfer box too (at the back of the box near the prop shaft) this is different oil (same as front axle)

Re-fill using the dip stick tube.

By the way if you start the engine for 5-10 seconds when the oil had drained it will get the rest out of torque converter
