Auto gearbox filter.

Ever wanted to know what the 2nd/3rd gen's auto transmission filter/strainer looked like?
This is what the inside of the just removed sump looks like, showing magnets.....

This what it looked like in a transmission that had done over 100,000 miles from new, the strainer was spotless!
So if your transmission is playing up, it's safe to say it probably isn't worth dropping the sump to 'clean' the strainer, it's either an ECU, cable adjustment or fluid problem.

True, I've never seen a grubby one. or much stuck to the magnets at all.

Can you clean the strainer out, or is it a throw away?

Just rinse it out with petrol or thinners.

Correct.
Unless the transmission isn't shifting properly and the electrical side of things have been ruled out.

I cant help myself, when I bought the Surf I flushed the engine out until the oil is clear (30ltrs and 3 filters) and same with the diffs and transfer box.

A little OCD I suppose but thats me. All thats left is the brown, burnt looking ATF.

A bit of a difference from servicing the old Rover 2000, 2.3, 2.6 n 3.5 Auto boxes of the middle 70's n 80's Vince .. tho
