I paid £2000 for my 3rd gen but, It did need abit of TLC including rad flush rear brakes stripped and cleaned, because of diff oil leaking due to a blocked breather, it needed front brakes as well and a ###### good wash and polish inside and out, oh and the wheels got a lick of paint as well. It was also mot'd till jan 2012 and was still taxed for two months as well, it also came with the jap history book as well. they are out there just be patient, i waited for eight months for one to come up cheap
3K is bundles in the summer- but not so much in Janurary... you'll get a decent one for 2500 max.I'd say come and check mine out, but I think you are a long way off

I looked around for a long time but eventually I found mine for £2600 with 12mths ticket, and it's in pretty reasonable condition apart from a dent on the offside bumper corner which is a mnor detail. Paintowrk just needs a good going over with t-cut but again, minor detail.
I had to travel for it but well worth the mileage. I thought i was lucky to get it at that price baring in mind how much they are going for on fleabay and it's already earned it's money back by taking me to the south of spain.
I'd have said with £3K you've got a good chance of buying a decent Surf, just be patient and look at lots.
