I think my autobox is on its way out, for the past year it has had 'sticky solenoid' symptoms when changing out of 1st (higher revs than normal until it's good n hot) but otherwise it has always been smooth and behaves normally when up to temp. today it did the same trick as my old camry just before its gearbox expired, setting off from a set of lights it was like a manual with a badly slipping clutch, lots of revs and barely moving until it changed into 2nd...its been fine since then but I have no confidence in the gearbox anymore.
I'm wondering if anyone on here has a good box for sale and if so, how much?

    Hi,

No gearbox for a 3.0L, but a question...what colour is the fluid in the box, large clutch slip will turn it towards brown/black....torque converter sprag clutch slip you can check with a stall test...might just need an oil change you never know, has it had one?

atf was changed about 20k miles back, it's more red than brown. surely if it was the torque converter it'd affect more than just 1st gear?

I would have thought so too, should effect all the gears during the torque multiplication phase (for want of a better phrase)...though having said that, a lack or torque is more noticeable in low gears...either way a stall test will show up a duff converter and a bad clutch...worth a test since your already having trouble

Can't say for sure on the 3L, but the 2.4 is around 2000RPM (that's what I got testing mine), most box/engine combo's stall at or around peak torque, so a petrol would be 2500RPM ish...try it and see what you get. Bad converter the RPM will be low, knackered clutch will be higher and probably creep up for the 10 seconds.

Words of warning, it generates lots of heat so don't do more than 10 seconds and let the engine run, gearbox in neutral, afterwards for a couple of minutes to let the oil cool.

my big worry about doing a stall test is that it may completely bugger 1st gear...if it is on its way out I don't want to accelerate the process, it's a 12 mile cycle ride to work
I'll do a stall test when I've got a replacement sourced

                fair point!
Good luck, sadly mine is for a 2.4 so no use I don't think (transmission code A343F)
