I always thought that too, but we saw a 2.4 SSR-X with one a couple of months ago - same little white sticker etc too. May have been after market I guess, but maybe (as with so many things on these cars) an option??

Maybe someone swapped in a complete rear axle from a UK 4Runner. V6 Runner was available with LSD on a 2nd Gen.

Yeah - maybe... it is the only one I've seen on a 2.4, and also the only one I've seen on a model other than a "Limited" model
