fair enough then, i had always just assumed the 4runners changed shape same time as the surfs. Take it that's not the case then?

For the most part they did. However Toyota let the UK 4Runner run an extra year or two as they wound it down. They never sold a 3rd gen shape 4Runner here unfortunately.

I heard the Pickup ones don't fit a Surf very well.
